Do you know that your $25 can save someone’s life?

AgapeMED is going on the third annual mission trip to Shashemene, Ethiopia to serve the needy and perform life-changing medical procedures, including surgeries and treatment of debilitating diseases and conditions. Now in existence for over 3 years, AgapeMED continues to strive to expand its medical mission and offerings to the less fortunate. On our first mission to Ethiopia in 2014, AgapeMED volunteers noticed immense shortcomings in the medical care offered in the town of Shashemene. While screening and researching on the health conditions of this particular population, we found many people that were suffering and dying from easily preventable and treatable diseases. These include but not limited to lower respiratory tract infections, TB, diarrheal diseases, malaria and other communicable and non-communicable disease. Unfortunately, we had similar findings in our 2015 medical mission to Holeta. Many young and old people were suffering with what we call in the US, unacceptable cause of suffering and death.

Almaz, a woman in her 40’s who has over a year old abscess in her upper shoulder that had grown like a tumor. She couldn’t see a doctor because of financial difficulties, which is a challenge for most people in this community. We were shocked to see her because her infection didn’t spread all over her body, Not Just YET! However, we knew that more days or months could mean less chances of survival. That day Almaz was treated and sent home with antibiotics with a smile on her face. Thanks to the doctors, nurses and other medical and non-medical volunteers who gave their time to make a difference in her life and many others.During this mission we served over 3,000 patients (including HIV+ and homeless children) in collaboration with another non-profit organization that is based in Ethiopia, CMDDF (Christian Medical Doctor and Dentist Fellowship). We are hoping that we will be able to reach even greater number of people on our upcoming medical mission to one of the only two hospitals in Shashemene, Melka Oda Hospital (MOH) that serves a population over 150,000.

MOH’s need for medical professionals as well as medical equipment’s where evident to us as soon as we walked in to the hospital during our 2014 visit. The first thing we noticed as we walked in were the long lines of patients waiting to be seen by a doctor. Walking into the emergency room was almost like standing in a small size bedroom.
The beds are old with no wheels and curtains to separate one bed to another. Patients have to walk or be carried by their families from rooms to rooms for tests or procedures. There are limited monitoring systems such as wall suctioning, oxygen concentrator and vital sign machines that are readily available for staff use.
Due to the lack of beds, supplies, equipment, and medical staffs, patients are often send to another hospital that is approximately 60 miles further away.

There are two operating rooms available but only one was functional because of the lack of medical staff and equipment’s.
The needs are many, but with you on our side we CAN make a difference!   We are happy to tell you that this year God provided us with a full container of medical equipment worth half million dollars to be donated to MOH through an organization called Matter (a Minnesota based non-profit humanitarian organization with a mission to equip medical mission groups like ours). This October we fundraised enough money to pay for the shipment of those lifesaving equipment and we are very thankful for your contribution. Now we are shifting our focus on the mission expenses to raise $30,000 to reach at list 3,000 patients. This money will help us buy medications for many of those patients, cover their extended hospital stay after their surgery as needed, transfer patients to other hospitals that require more advanced treatments, support about 100 homeless & HIV + children in the area, and also cover the extra costs we support to volunteers who give their time to care for the medically underprivileged.

It is our mission to care to those that are waiting for our arrival with love. In order to meet our mission and provide services for those who are in need of medical care, we rely on the generous contribution of individuals and businesses. We hope that you will be able to take part and experience firsthand the pride we take in supporting our cause.
